Monophthongs – Remember Phonetics is Physical: Vowels

Hi there, this is quick video to remind you that the key to good English pronunciation is physical.
We are going to go through the monophthongs. As we go through these sounds you need to think about the three questions.

  • Is your mouth open, closed or in the middle?
  • What is the position of your tongue?
  • and what shape are your lips?

 

Monophthongs

The position of each symbol on the chart tells us something about it is pronounced. From the top to the bottom tells us about how we should open our mouths. Left to right tells us about the position of our tongue inside our mouth.
